Vintage Japanese Freestanding Full-Length Dressing Mirror (Kagami), Late Showa circa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0920
A boldly grained floor mirror from the Late Showa era -- striking mid-century modern design with deeply lacquered wood and a softly foxed vintage glass panel.
A kagami, or standing mirror, was an essential fixture in the Japanese home -- placed in the bedroom or entryway to serve as a full-length dressing mirror for daily grooming and kimono dressing. This vintage Japanese floor mirror dates to the Late Showa period (1966-1989), a time when Japanese furniture makers began blending traditional craftsmanship with mid-century modern sensibilities. The tall, narrow rectangular mirror panel sits within a slim, cleanly jointed frame finished in a deep burgundy-toned lacquer. The wood displays a dramatically bold linear grain -- consistent with a richly figured hardwood, possibly kaki (persimmon) or a similarly striking domestic species -- polished to a high sheen that only deepens with age. The freestanding base features a pair of sculpted splayed feet with gently arched cutouts, giving the piece a grounded, architectural presence that feels both functional and sculptural. The mirror glass itself carries the soft, patchy foxing typical of aged silvering, adding a layer of wabi-sabi character that no modern reproduction can replicate.
In a contemporary home, this vintage full-length mirror makes an immediate statement. Lean it in a bedroom corner as a dressing mirror and bedroom decor focal point, or position it in an entryway to reflect light and add depth -- a classic use in Japandi style and minimalist decor interiors alike. Its slender silhouette suits narrow hallways and compact dressing rooms without overwhelming the space. The warm, dark-stained wood frame pairs naturally with linen, rattan, and natural stone, making it a versatile accent for wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors. A rare and expressive piece, it also makes a unique housewarming gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft and mid-century modern decor enthusiasts.
