Vintage Japanese Kyodai Dressing Mirror with Storage Cabinet, Mid-Showa (1946-1965) | SKU: 26J-0806-1

A freestanding mid-century kyodai vanity with a boldly grained two-tone finish, tilting arched mirror, and a generously appointed storage cabinet below.

A kyodai is a traditional Japanese freestanding dressing mirror -- typically a tall tilting mirror mounted on pivot supports above a low storage cabinet -- used daily at the bedroom dressing table for grooming, hair arranging, and cosmetic storage. This handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture piece dates to the mid-Showa period (approximately 1946-1965), a time when domestic furniture production blended traditional Japanese joinery with a streamlined modern sensibility. The tall arched mirror, framed in a boldly figured dark wood veneer with dramatic swirling grain, tilts freely on its side supports and offers a near full-length reflection. The two-tone construction -- warm honey-toned plain wood on the cabinet body and sides, contrasted by the richly striped dark veneer on the drawer fronts, mirror frame, and cabinet door -- was a hallmark of mid-Showa mass-produced furniture and gives this piece a graphic, almost Art Deco quality. Light-toned kiri-style interiors keep the drawers smooth-sliding and moisture-resistant, as was standard in quality Japanese bedroom furniture of the era.

In today's home, this vintage Japanese kyodai works beautifully as a statement bedroom vanity or a freestanding entryway mirror with hidden storage. Styled against a white or plaster wall -- as seen here -- it reads immediately as a wabi-sabi or Japandi-style accent, its two-tone woodwork adding warmth and visual texture without clutter. The stepped cabinet top provides a convenient tray surface for keys, sunglasses, or a small plant, while the multiple pull-out drawers keep jewelry, accessories, or cosmetics neatly organized out of sight. It would make a truly unique housewarming gift or a standout find for collectors of mid-century modern and vintage Japanese craft. Whether placed in a bedroom, hallway, or dressing room, it brings an effortless layer of history and craft to minimalist decor.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
