Vintage Japanese Kyodai Mirror (SKU 25D-465-1)

Showa-era kiri tansu-style dressing mirror with delicate openwork detail

This handsome vintage Japanese dressing mirror, or kyōdai, combines a tall tilting mirror with a compact tansu-style base, creating a practical yet elegant piece for the vanity or entryway. The richly figured front panels display a dramatic, almost rippling grain that catches the light, contrasted by the quieter straight grain of the top surfaces.

Beneath the mirror, finely cut openwork motifs of flying birds and flowering branches lend a subtle Showa romance, echoed by a cloud-like cutout at the back of the central well. Multiple drawers with original metal pulls provide storage for combs, cosmetics, or small accessories, while the warm patina, gentle wear and slightly foxed original glass all speak to decades of careful use.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
