Vintage Japanese Low Floor Desk with Square Inlay End Panels and Scroll Feet Sled Base, Early Showa Period 1927-1945

A rare and refined vintage Japanese floor desk with drawers -- handcrafted hardwood with sled base, scroll feet, and decorative inlay detail.

A kyokuroku-style low desk is a traditional Japanese floor-level writing or work table designed for use while seated on tatami. This exceptional example of Japanese vintage furniture dates to the Early Showa period and displays the disciplined craftsmanship characteristic of that era. The wide, flat top panel -- milled from a richly grained hardwood consistent with keyaki (zelkova) -- is framed by subtly raised gallery edges at each short end, preventing items from sliding off during use. The front apron houses a row of side-by-side drawers, each fitted with a cast metal bail handle that retains its dark patina. Drawer interiors are finished in a lighter secondary wood, a hallmark of quality Japanese joinery where primary and secondary timbers were deliberately paired. The piece qualifies as Japanese vintage furniture, with its earliest possible production year well over a century ago.

In a modern home, this low desk adapts beautifully to contemporary living. Its compact 12.5-inch height and generous 39-inch width make it a natural choice as a living room coffee table with hidden storage -- perfectly suited to a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. It also functions as a floor-level meditation or reading desk in a bedroom or studio, or as a striking entryway console placed against a wall with objects displayed on top. The decorative square inlay detail along the end panels and the gracefully curved scroll feet on the sled base give it an artful presence that stands out as a unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese furniture with genuine history.

A distinguished piece of Japanese vintage furniture -- handcrafted with quiet elegance and built to bring warmth, history, and functional beauty to any modern living space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
