Showa-era square serving board with richly mottled vermilion-and-black urushi finish
This vintage Japanese lacquered board is a striking example of mid-Showa design, featuring a broad square format with softly rounded corners and a raised rim. The surface is finished in a deep vermilion and black pattern reminiscent of negoro and stone-textured ishime-nuri, creating a dynamic field of swirling color that catches the light under its glossy urushi coat.
Originally used as a low table top or generous oban serving tray, this versatile board works beautifully today as a centerpiece base for ikebana, tea utensils, or contemporary tableware. The reverse is finished in matte black, allowing the richly patterned face to stand out as an elegant focal point in either traditional or modern interiors.
A handsome Showa-era lacquered board that adds depth, warmth, and authentic Japanese character to any display.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
