Vintage Japanese Kutani Ware Hanaire Flower Vase, Attributed to Tokuda Yasokichi, with Tomobako, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-608
A refined Kutani ware hanaire flower vase with a luminous gradated glaze, attributed to Tokuda Yasokichi and accompanied by its original signed tomobako wooden box.
A hanaire is a Japanese flower vase used for ikebana, the traditional art of flower arrangement. This elegant vintage Japanese Kutani ware hanaire features a slender hourglass silhouette, rising from a stable flared foot into a narrow waist and gently opening at the rim. The form is simple and graceful, allowing the glaze to become the central focus of the piece.
The surface is finished in a dramatic flowing glaze, beginning with a deep glossy black at the base and gradually transitioning upward into rich indigo, blue, green, and yellow-green tones. The luminous colors cascade down from the rim in soft vertical movements, creating an effect reminiscent of light passing through water or layered mineral color. This style of vivid gradation and jewel-like glaze is strongly associated with the celebrated Kutani ceramic tradition, and the piece bears a mark on the base believed to correspond to Tokuda Yasokichi. The accompanying tomobako also carries brush-written inscription and seal, supporting the attribution and enhancing the vase’s collector appeal.
In a modern home, this Kutani hanaire works beautifully as both a functional ikebana vase and a sculptural decorative object. Its slender neck is especially suited for a single branch, long-stemmed flower, or minimalist seasonal arrangement. Displayed on a console table, shelf, mantel, or tokonoma-style alcove, the vase brings a quiet yet striking presence to the room. Its deep blue-green glaze pairs beautifully with Japandi, wabi-sabi, minimalist, and mid-century modern interiors.
