Vintage Japanese Incense Burner (SKU 25D-487)

Finely cast bronze koro with quail, lotus pod and carp in harmonious Showa-era style

This charming vintage Japanese incense burner (koro) is sculpted as a natural vignette from the waterside: a plump quail perches on a pierced lotus seed pod, while two carp support the bowl above curling lotus leaves. The rich brown patina, crisp feather and scale work, and the softly worn high points speak to careful casting and years of respectful handling.

Lotus, carp (koi) and quail are auspicious motifs in Japanese art, symbolising purity, perseverance and seasonal abundance. Smoke from the incense rises gently through the lotus “seeds” and side vents, animating the scene during tea ceremony or daily use. Signed to the body and complete with its fitted wooden tomobako storage box, this koro is a delightful Showa-era accent for an alcove, desk or tokonoma display.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
