This is an antique Japanese small personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from Taisho period (1910's-1920's).
Originally used to store textiles, small items and various bric-a-brac.
It was made using Japanese Ash (Toneriko), Horse Chestnut (Tochinoki), and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods.  In today's home, it would work well as a storage unit as well as a side table or stand.
