This is a vintage Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from early Showa (1950's). It was made using Japanese Mulberry (Kuwanoki) and Paulownia (Kirinoki) woods. It has beautiful continuous wooden grains and detailed handles.
Originally used to store small accessories and bric-a-brac, its contemporary use would function well as a side table or bedside stand.
