Vintage Japanese Karatsu-yaki Suiban with Crab Figure, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0487

A sculptural Karatsu stoneware water basin with a finely modeled crab perched on the rugged rim -- a wabi-sabi masterwork in miniature.

A suiban is a shallow ceramic water tray used in Japanese ikebana flower arranging to hold water and anchor stems, stones, or driftwood in a naturalistic composition. This handcrafted Japanese stoneware example, attributed to the Karatsu-yaki tradition of Saga Prefecture in northern Kyushu, is shaped in the form of a craggy tidal rock pool -- its exterior left deliberately rough and unglazed in warm iron-ochre tones, while the interior and rim are finished in a flowing olive-brown ash glaze that pools and shimmers like still water. Perched on the rim edge is a meticulously sculpted ceramic crab glazed in deep iron-red brown, its legs, claws, and carapace rendered with lifelike precision -- a playful yet refined decorative flourish that transforms this functional vessel into a work of ceramic sculpture. The tomobako (artist's wooden box) bears brushed calligraphy consistent with a Karatsu attribution and an artist's signature, lending this piece the provenance and collectability prized by serious collectors of vintage Japanese craft.

Today, this suiban water tray is as versatile as it is beautiful. Display it as a living room accent filled with smooth river stones and a single stem of bamboo or seasonal foliage for an effortless wabi-sabi aesthetic. It makes a striking desk organizer or catchall tray on a home office surface, corralling small items while adding sculptural interest. The shallow basin also works beautifully as a decorative accent on an entryway console or as a centerpiece on a low dining table -- a unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese ceramics with genuine artistic character. Its compact footprint suits Japandi-style interiors where natural materials and quiet beauty take center stage.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
