Vintage Japanese Hotei Statue (SKU 25D-176-2)
Cheerful Showa-era Hotei figure with richly enamelled robes and gold accents
This vintage Japanese statue depicts Hotei, the beloved god of happiness and abundance, standing with his characteristic laughing expression, round belly, and relaxed posture. Finely modelled in clay and finished in warm earthy tones, his face and torso are left largely unglazed to highlight the sculptural detail, while the features are picked out with subtle hand-painted shading.
His flowing kimono is lavishly decorated in a style reminiscent of Satsuma-style enamelling, with dense floral and geometric motifs outlined in raised gilt and coloured enamels. Hotei holds his travelling staff and a fan (ōgi), traditional symbols of protection and wish-granting, making this an auspicious piece for a tokonoma alcove, entryway, or as a focal point in a curated Showa-era collection.
