Vintage Japanese Hotei Statue, Showa Era (SKU 25D-142)

Substantial Showa-era style Hotei figure with traveling sack and staff

This expressive vintage Japanese statue depicts Hotei, the beloved god of contentment and good fortune, captured mid-stride with his characteristic round belly and joyful smile. Cast in a deep, dark finish that highlights the textured surface, the figure wears flowing robes and carries a large sack over his shoulder, evoking the classic wandering monk imagery found throughout Japanese temple and folk art.

The sculptor has emphasized movement and personality: Hotei’s right hand grips his robe at the chest while his left hand lightly balances a long staff across his shoulders, from which the bulging sack (hobo bag) hangs behind. The piece has a strong, grounded presence ideal for a tokonoma alcove, entryway, or as a focal point in a curated collection of Showa-era Buddhist and folk sculpture.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
