Japanese Hondana With Hikidashi Drawer | Vintage Desktop Bookshelf & Home Office Storage, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-921-2

A handcrafted Japanese hondana with a small hikidashi drawer -- warm wood tone, graceful arched dividers, and quiet Early Showa charm.

A hondana, or Japanese bookshelf, is a compact storage piece traditionally used for books, documents, writing materials, and small personal items. This vintage Japanese example features a low horizontal form with several open compartments arranged across the top, making it ideal for sorting books, letters, papers, or display objects. The structure is built from warm-toned wood with a rich chestnut-brown finish that has mellowed beautifully with age. The upright dividers are shaped with soft arched tops, giving the piece a gentle architectural rhythm, while the right side is fitted with a single hikidashi pull-out drawer finished with a small round knob.

One of the most charming details is the pierced decorative fretwork panel at the center back. Its delicate silhouette adds a refined Japanese character to the otherwise practical form, creating a beautiful balance between utility and ornament. The open left side, multiple vertical compartments, and small drawer make this piece especially versatile for a modern home.

Today, this Early Showa hondana works beautifully as a desktop organizer, small bookshelf, mail sorter, or display shelf. Use it in a home office to organize letters, notebooks, stationery, and writing tools; place it on a dresser for jewelry, scarves, and small accessories; or style it in a living room with small books, ceramics, candles, or seasonal decor. Its compact size and warm aged surface make it a natural fit for Japandi style, wabi-sabi interiors, rustic decor, or collectors of Japanese antique furniture.

A characterful piece of Japanese antique furniture -- practical, compact, and beautifully aged, bringing the quiet elegance of Early Showa craftsmanship into a modern home or office.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
