Vintage Japanese Kakejiku Hanging Scroll, Sansui Landscape with Pagoda, Cranes, and Waterfall, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0817-9

A sweeping ink-and-pigment landscape of misty peaks, a pagoda compound, cranes, and cascading falls -- hand-painted on paper with full fabric mounting.

A kakejiku is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll, designed to be suspended in the tokonoma (alcove) of a formal room and changed with the seasons to reflect nature, occasion, or aesthetic mood. This example presents a grand sansui (landscape) composition spanning the full length of the scroll: jagged mountain peaks dissolve into mist in the upper register, where a deep red sun floats above the ridgeline. The middle ground reveals a multi-tiered pagoda complex nestled among pine-clad bluffs, painted with careful color accents of green and red against the otherwise ink-wash palette. In the lower register, a rushing waterfall tumbles over dark boulders while a pair of cranes -- symbols of longevity and good fortune -- stand posed on the rocks below. Delicate white and turquoise dot-work throughout the foliage adds a sparkling, decorative quality consistent with Japanese vintage scroll painting traditions of the late Showa period. The composition is signed in brush script with a red inkan (artist's seal) in the lower left corner; the artist's identity has not been confirmed. The mounting is professionally executed with a rich dark-brown brocade border framing the painting panel, a narrow gilt inner liner, a sage-green fabric header and footer, and ivory-toned roller end caps -- all hallmarks of quality kakejiku craftsmanship.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese hanging scroll makes an immediate statement as fine wall art. Its vertical format and muted, earthy palette suit a range of interior styles -- from Japandi style and wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors to more eclectic living room or entryway decor. Hang it as a focal point above a console table or low sideboard to evoke the meditative calm of a traditional tokonoma, without any renovation required. It also works beautifully in a home office or reading nook as a grounding piece of Japanese vintage art, or displayed in a dedicated art alcove alongside ceramic vessels and natural elements. A truly unique gift for collectors of Japanese art, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted works with history and soul.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
