Vintage Japanese Kakejiku Hanging Scroll, Hotei Ink Painting, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0817-8

A freely brushed ink portrait of Hotei -- the laughing deity of contentment and good fortune -- rendered with expressive economy on aged paper, framed in an olive-gold cloud-patterned border.

A kakejiku is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll used to adorn the tokonoma, the recessed alcove found in formal Japanese rooms, where a single seasonal or auspicious image was displayed to set the mood and welcome guests. This scroll presents Hotei, one of Japan's beloved Shichi Fukujin (Seven Lucky Gods), depicted in a bold, gestural ink-brush style known as sumie. The rotund, bald, grinning figure clutches a large fan-shaped object -- a classic attribute referencing wisdom and joy -- while resting against his iconic treasure sack, a symbol of generosity and abundance. An artist's signature and red inkan seal appear to the right of the figure, lending the work a personal and scholarly character consistent with Showa-era literati painting traditions. The aged paper ground has mellowed to a warm honey tone, and the mounting features an olive-gold patterned border with a repeating cloud motif, accented by a contrasting inner strip and finished with red-lacquered wooden roller ends -- hallmarks of a carefully assembled Japanese vintage scroll.

Today, this vintage kakejiku makes a striking statement piece in any home that appreciates handcrafted Japanese art. Hang it as living room wall decor above a low bench or console for an instant wabi-sabi aesthetic, or display it in a home office or meditation space to invite the calm, joyful energy Hotei represents. Its tall, narrow format suits entryway decor beautifully -- a welcoming symbol of good fortune for every arrival. The scroll also makes a meaningful and unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage art, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates Japandi style interiors. Simply suspend from the existing hanging cord and enjoy a piece of Japan's rich painting heritage without any additional framing.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
