Vintage Japanese Kakejiku Hanging Scroll, Rising Sun and Ocean Waves, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0817-6
A vivid rising sun over rolling ocean waves -- a classic auspicious motif rendered with masterful brushwork on paper
A kakejiku is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll used to adorn the tokonoma, the sacred alcove found in formal Japanese rooms, where it sets the seasonal or ceremonial mood of the space. This striking example depicts hinode -- the rising sun -- as a bold crimson disc ascending above a luminous golden horizon, with dynamic green-and-white ocean waves surging powerfully in the lower register. The composition is one of the most celebrated auspicious subjects in Japanese painting, evoking good fortune, renewal, and the enduring strength of nature. The painting surface, rendered on paper in mineral pigments and ink, displays accomplished gradation work in the solar disc and confident, fluid brushstrokes in the wave rendering, with white pigment highlights lending the foam a three-dimensional brilliance. The scroll is finished in a layered brocade mounting of blue-grey floral fabric with contrasting inner and outer border panels, and is fitted with a warm-toned lower roller with dark lacquered tips -- all hallmarks of quality kakejiku production from the Late Showa period. A brush-script artist signature and red seal appear in the lower right of the painting panel, consistent with standard Japanese painting convention.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese hanging scroll makes an immediate visual statement as living room wall art, entryway decor, or a focal accent in a home office or meditation space. Its tall vertical format suits narrow walls and high-ceilinged rooms equally well, and the warm amber, deep green, and vivid red palette integrates naturally into Japandi style, wabi-sabi aesthetic, or minimalist decor schemes. Simply hang it from its cord on a picture hook -- no framing required. At six feet tall, it commands attention above a console table, bed headboard, or mantelpiece, and makes a genuinely unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese art with symbolic meaning.
