Vintage Japanese Kakejiku Hanging Scroll, Winter Nandina, Bamboo and Bird, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0817-4
A luminous winter nature painting -- snow-laden nandina berries, bamboo, and a small perched bird -- rendered in mineral pigments on paper with gold-toned brocade mounting.
A kakejiku is a traditional Japanese hanging scroll -- a mounted painting or calligraphy designed to be suspended from a hook in the tokonoma (alcove) of a Japanese room, where it serves as the visual and seasonal focal point of the space. This finely executed example depicts a hushed winter scene: clusters of vivid red nandina berries bow under mounds of fresh snow, their crimson brilliance set against cool grey-green bamboo stems and delicately rendered foliage in muted purples and gold. A small brown bird perches quietly at the lower right, observing the stillness -- a classic kacho-ga (bird-and-flower) composition evoking the wabi-sabi aesthetic of transient natural beauty. The painting is signed in brushwork with a red inkan seal at the lower left. The mounting features a warm amber-gold brocade border in a repeating medallion pattern, framing the painted panel with understated elegance. Lacquered wooden roller ends in deep reddish-brown complete the scroll, and a wooden storage box with handwritten inscription is included, consistent with the presentation standards of vintage Japanese craft.
In a modern home, this kakejiku makes a stunning piece of Japanese vintage wall art suited to a wide range of interior styles. Hang it as a living room accent above a low console or credenza, or display it in an entryway to create an immediate sense of calm and cultural depth. Its vertical format and neutral warm palette integrate beautifully into Japandi style interiors, wabi-sabi-inspired spaces, and minimalist decor alike. The seasonal winter subject makes it especially evocative during autumn and winter months, and it serves as a thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese art. No frame is needed -- the brocade mounting does the work, making it as easy to hang as it is beautiful to live with.
