Vintage Japanese Hanging Flower Vase (SKU 25D-306)

Small Showa-era kakehana vase in the form of a gourd entwined with foliage

This compact hanging flower vase, or kakehana, is carved in the shape of a plump gourd with finely modeled leaves and blossoms wrapping around the neck. The body has been polished to a deep, warm brown, while the foliage is rendered in darker relief, giving the piece a rich, sculptural presence despite its intimate scale.

Intended to hang from a nail or hook by the small metal loop at the top, this vase would hold a single seasonal sprig in the alcove, or tokonoma, in keeping with Japanese tea and flower-arranging aesthetics. The gourd motif, long associated with good fortune and protection, makes it a charming accent for a wabi-sabi inspired interior or a focused addition to a collection of Showa-period folk and tea utensils.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
