This vintage Japanese goban features a full 19x19 grid of precisely incised lines with clearly marked star points (hoshi), laid out on a slab of pale, fine-grained natural wood. A brass care label affixed to the underside reads "tennen ki seihin" -- meaning "natural wood product" -- and notes that the legs are press-fit style, confirming this is a quality manufactured piece rather than a mass-market import. The tight, straight grain visible on the sides and reverse is consistent with conifer species traditionally favored for goban production in mid-Showa Japan. The board shows minimal wear, suggesting it was lightly played and carefully kept.
