Vintage Japanese Lacquer Lidded Box with Nashiji Ground and Maki-e Floral Decoration, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26J-0701
A handcrafted Japanese lacquer box with nashiji-style speckled ground and gold maki-e floral decoration -- signed with a red artist seal.
A lacquered lidded box in the Japanese craft tradition, this flat rectangular piece features a wood core finished in a deep, near-black lacquer ground with a richly speckled, nashiji-inspired surface that shimmers subtly in changing light. The lid is painted with an elegant maki-e-style composition -- a large open flower rendered in warm amber and orange tones, its petals fanning outward from a detailed center, accompanied by gracefully curving stems and gold leaf-form motifs that drift across the surface. A small red artist seal in the lower corner confirms studio craft production rather than mass manufacture. The underside of both the box and lid carry the same polished speckled lacquer, lending a refined finish to every surface. An original storage sleeve accompanies the piece, indicating this was gifted or displayed in the Japanese tradition of beautifully presented craft objects.
Today this vintage Japanese lacquer box translates beautifully into modern living spaces. Its shallow, generous proportions make it ideal as a jewelry box on a bedroom dresser -- rings, earrings, and small keepsakes nest naturally inside the smooth lacquered interior. On a home office desk it brings a wabi-sabi aesthetic as a stationery organizer or correspondence tray, while on a living room console it functions as a striking decorative accent in a Japandi style setting. The bold floral motif and high-gloss finish make it a truly unique gift for collectors of Japanese craft, or a refined housewarming gift for anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese decorative objects.
