Vintage Japanese Hand-Hammered Copper Ikebana Vessel, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26J-0847
A monumental hand-hammered copper vessel of rare scale -- equally at home as an ikebana centerpiece, a floor sculpture, or a dramatic wall accent.
An ikebana vessel is a container used in the Japanese art of floral arrangement, designed to give prominence to form, line, and negative space rather than abundance. This large-scale example takes the concept into bold sculptural territory: a wide, low-domed disc of hand-hammered copper rising from a broad flared base to a central circular opening, the entire surface worked with dense, even peen marks that catch light from every angle. The warm copper tone -- deepening to rich amber at the crown and darkening softly in the recessed hammer facets -- gives the piece a living quality that shifts with the light of the room. The interior cavity, lined in a contrasting dark finish, creates a strong visual counterpoint to the luminous outer shell. Craftsmanship of this ambition sits firmly within the tradition of Japanese decorative metalwork, where the technique of hand-hammering -- known as tsuiki -- is a disciplined, time-intensive craft practiced by specialist artisans.
At nearly three feet in diameter, this vessel commands a room on its own terms. Display it horizontally on a low plinth or dining table as an ikebana centerpiece -- a single branch of cherry blossom or autumn maple placed through the central opening is all it needs. Fill the interior cavity with water and float seasonal blooms for a floating floral arrangement that suits a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic living room. Alternatively, mount it vertically on the wall as a sculptural art object -- its toroidal silhouette reads as confidently as a large-format bronze sculpture. A genuinely rare find and a unique housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese craft metalwork or anyone drawn to handcrafted statement pieces in their home.
