Vintage Japanese Ikebana Bamboo Flower Basket, Showa Era (SKU 25D-408-1)

Showa-era bamboo hanakago section with carved opening for ikebana display

Fashioned from a single, heavy bamboo culm, this vintage Japanese flower basket embodies the rustic elegance prized in chabana and ikebana. The maker has cut a sweeping, asymmetrical opening into the stalk, revealing a soot-darkened inner chamber that creates dramatic contrast with the warm, honeyed exterior surface.

The base retains its natural node rings and age cracks, emphasizing the wabi-sabi character of the piece, while the interior houses a fitted black cylinder to hold water and stems securely. Ideal as a wall-adjacent or alcove (tokonoma) accent, this sculptural bamboo vessel brings an authentic Showa-era presence to any Japanese-inspired interior.

  • Origin: Japan

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
