Vintage Japanese Hanakago Flower Basket, Showa Era (SKU 25D-065-1)

Dynamic spherical bamboo hanakago for seasonal ikebana display

This sculptural vintage Japanese flower basket is woven in a striking spherical form, its broad smoked-bamboo strips spiraling around the body like protective armor. The rich reddish-brown surface, darkened at the rims and handle, speaks to years of careful use and handling, giving the piece a quiet wabi-sabi presence that suits both traditional tokonoma alcoves and contemporary interiors.

The neck and circular handle are executed in a freer, more expressive plait, creating a vivid contrast with the smooth globe below—a style often favored for freestyle ikebana (jiyūbana). A compact yet bold hanakago, it is ideal for presenting a single branch, wild grasses, or a seasonal chabana arrangement beside the tea bowl.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
