Description

This vintage furuimi (winnowing basket), crafted in Japan during the Shōwa period (1950s), is a beautiful example of traditional agricultural tools once essential to rural life. Handwoven from bamboo or reed, the basket was used to separate grain from chaff—an important step in rice and grain processing before the rise of modern machinery.

The shallow, open form allowed farmers to skillfully toss harvested grain into the air, letting the lighter husks blow away with the wind while the heavier kernels fell back into the basket. This method, passed down through generations, reflects the harmony between craftsmanship, labor, and nature in Japan’s farming heritage.

Today, this furuimi basket stands as a tactile reminder of a simpler, hand-driven era. Its natural materials and timeworn texture make it ideal as a decorative wall hanging, textural accent in modern interiors, or a meaningful addition to a collection of Japanese folk tools.
