Vintage Japanese Ko tansu, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0154-1

A compact and portable handcrafted Japanese storage chest with side carrying handles and pull-out drawers -- a rare survivor of everyday Early Showa craftsmanship.

A Ko tansu is a small, low Japanese storage chest designed to keep personal belongings, documents, or sewing accessories organized and close at hand at floor level. This handsome example -- crafted from a straight-grained Japanese softwood, likely matsu (pine) or a similar native species -- displays the warm amber tones and honest construction typical of provincial Japanese vintage furniture from the early Showa period. The broad, flat lid sits cleanly atop the body and appears to lift away, revealing a shallow interior compartment above the drawer tier. Corner joinery blocks are clearly visible on all sides, reinforcing the structure in the manner common to practical storage pieces of the era. The iron hardware -- U-shaped drawer pulls and substantial D-ring side handles -- has developed a rich dark patina that complements the aged wood beautifully.

At just over two feet wide and only eight inches tall, this Ko tansu slips naturally into a modern home without demanding attention. Use it as a low living room accent piece to stow remotes and small essentials beneath a sofa console, or place it on a desk or sideboard as a handsome desktop organizer for stationery, jewelry, or craft supplies. Its flat top surface doubles as a display platform for a small plant, a candle, or a ceramic object, making it equally at home in a Japandi-style bedroom or a wabi-sabi inspired home office. A thoughtful housewarming gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft or anyone drawn to understated, functional vintage pieces with genuine history.

A beautifully preserved piece of Japanese vintage furniture -- compact, portable, and full of quiet character for any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
