Showa-era Japanese hibachi chest with original copper-lined brazier and kettles
This characterful vintage Japanese hibachi chest, or hibachi tansu, combines warm hardwood joinery with a beautifully aged copper-lined fire box. The main well retains its original removable copper insert and a pair of heavy copper kettles, their surfaces mellowed to a rich, smoky patina from decades of gentle use. To one side, a raised work surface offers a natural place to pour tea or sake, evoking the intimate atmosphere of a traditional Showa-period home.
Practical storage drawers with classic iron pulls run along the right and lower fronts, once used for charcoal, utensils, and tea wares. Dovetailed corners, solid wood construction, and the layered oxidation inside the brazier all speak to its age and authenticity. Today, this piece serves beautifully as a low table, focal point for a tea corner, or sculptural statement in a wabi-sabi, Japanese, or rustic interior.
A soulful, functional relic of Showa-era daily life, ready to anchor a warm and inviting interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
