Vintage Japanese Tokkuri-gata Kabin Stoneware Flower Vase, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0562-7

A studio-crafted long-neck stoneware vase with faceted form and mottled green ash-style glaze -- presented with its original signed wooden box.

A kabin is a traditional Japanese flower vase used for decorative arrangement and, in its more refined form, for ikebana -- the classical Japanese art of flower arrangement. This striking example is a tokkuri-gata kabin, or bottle-form vase, shaped with a full faceted globular body rising to a long, slender faceted neck. The stoneware body is formed from an iron-rich red-brown clay, left unglazed at the flat faceted base and lower body, where the raw clay glows warmly against the dripping green glaze above. The glaze itself -- a mottled, speckled blend of celadon green, olive, and amber -- pools and flows down the faceted panels in a manner that speaks to the controlled unpredictability prized in Japanese studio ceramics. An impressed artist seal is visible on the base, and the piece is accompanied by its original signed wooden tomobako (presentation box) bearing calligraphic inscription, a hallmark of named studio work and a significant addition for collectors of vintage Japanese craft.

This kabin is a natural fit for the modern home as a standalone sculptural accent. Its tall, slender silhouette and wabi-sabi aesthetic make it ideal as a living room accent piece on a shelf, mantle, or entryway console, where a single dried branch or spare stem of pampas grass would honor its ikebana heritage. The earthy green and rust tones complement Japandi style interiors, mid-century modern decor, and natural material palettes equally well. It also makes a meaningful gift for collectors -- a unique housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese ceramics with documented provenance. The included tomobako adds display and storage value and confirms its status as a signed studio piece.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
