Vintage Japanese Bit Horse S Mouthpiec (SKU 25D-227-3)

Showa-era Japanese horse bit with distinctive grid cheek pieces and original kiri-wood box

This vintage Japanese horse’s mouthpiece (bit) dates to the mid-Showa period and reflects the practical elegance of traditional uma-gu (horse tack). Fashioned in bright, silvery metal, the bit features unusual oval cheek pieces divided by crossbars, designed to stabilize the position in the horse’s mouth while giving the rider refined control.

The articulated central joint, ring attachments and straight shanks suggest use in training or ceremonial tack rather than everyday farm work, making it a compelling piece for equestrian collectors and those interested in Japanese military or agricultural history. It is presented in its fitted wooden kiribako, inscribed on the lid, ideal for preservation or display as a sculptural, industrial-style object.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
