Vintage Japanese Basket, 1940s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-157)

Handwoven Showa-era style basket with sculptural handle and warm, time-softened patina

This tall, oval-bodied vintage Japanese basket is woven in tight, rhythmic rows that speak to the quiet precision of mid-20th-century craft. The gently swelling form rises to an asymmetric, softly scooped rim, giving the piece a relaxed, organic silhouette that feels at home in both wabi-sabi and contemporary interiors.

A boldly braided handle crowns the piece, its criss-crossed strands adding a sculptural counterpoint to the finely worked body. The deep, chocolate-brown surface shows a subtle sheen from age and use, enhancing the natural grain of the vine and making this basket ideal as a display object, ikebana container with an inner liner, or refined storage by an entryway or tokonoma.

A characterful Showa-era basket that brings quiet Japanese elegance and practical beauty to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
