Vintage Japanese Andon Floor Lamp, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0454
A handcrafted shoji-style andon floor lamp with carved naturalistic base detail and warm washi-diffused glow
An andon is a traditional Japanese lantern-style lamp, historically used to cast soft, diffused light in tatami rooms and refined interior spaces. This Showa-era electric andon stands as a fine example of handcrafted Japanese lighting, built from richly grained wood -- likely matsu (pine) -- with a bold, flame-textured surface finish that deepens beautifully with age. The tall square lantern body is fitted on all sides with shoji-style translucent paper panels set into a grid of slim wooden muntins, diffusing warm light in the gentle, even way associated with the wabi-sabi aesthetic. A gracefully curved crest rail crowns the top, echoing the silhouette of a shrine or temple gate, while the lower open platform features a striking carved naturalistic wood panel -- suggestive of a gnarled pine branch or wave form -- that adds sculptural character rarely found in production-era pieces. One side panel is fully removable for easy bulb access. The electric socket and cord confirm this piece was designed or adapted for electric use, consistent with Late Showa residential interiors.
Today, this vintage Japanese andon floor lamp makes an exceptional statement in a wide range of modern interiors. Placed in a living room corner or beside a reading chair, it casts a warm, meditative glow that suits Japandi style, minimalist decor, and zen-inspired bedroom decor alike. Its sculptural carved base and shoji panel construction make it as beautiful unlit as it is illuminated -- a genuine conversation piece and a unique housewarming gift for collectors or Japanophiles. The open lower shelf can display a small ceramic, a river stone, or a sprig of dried botanicals, adding further layered interest to the piece. Whether used as primary ambient lighting or as a decorative accent in an entryway or home office, this andon brings an authentic sense of Japanese craft and quiet beauty to any modern home.
