Vintage Japanese Ainu Bear, Showa Era (SKU 25D-324-2)
Hand-carved Hokkaidō kuma wood sculpture with finely incised fur
This vintage Ainu bear carving captures the powerful back and shoulders of the Hokkaidō brown bear, rendered in dense, rhythmic chisel work. The sculptor has focused on the animal’s mass and movement, carving deep striations in the wood to suggest layered fur that glints subtly under the finish.
Typical of Shōwa-era Ainu folk art, the piece is carved from a single block of wood and finished in a dark stain that highlights the grain along the spine and limbs. Displayed on a tokonoma shelf or modern interior, it offers an evocative example of traditional Hokkaidō craft and a classic motif of Japanese souvenir art.
