Vintage Japanese Panels Screen Divider (SKU 25D-463)

Showa-era bamboo and wood room divider with delicate openwork details

This vintage Japanese four-panel screen, or byōbu, combines warm sugi (Japanese cedar) frames with finely strung bamboo reeds to create a light, breathable partition. The natural gradation in the bamboo and the slim horizontal battens give the piece an airy, summery presence reminiscent of traditional susōkabe and sudare room dividers used in Showa-period homes and teahouses.

Across the mid and lower rails, carved wooden panels feature cloud-like grain and inlaid bird and wave motifs, framed by intricate latticework that recalls classic kumiko patterns. Folding hinges allow the screen divider to stand freely in gentle curves, making it ideal for zoning a living space, softening a corner, or adding an authentic Japanese accent to an entry, studio, or retail display.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
