Vintage Japanese Chado Tea Ceremony Set (Chawan, Chasen, Natsume, Kensui Vessel, and Storage Box), Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-833
A complete vintage Japanese chado set -- chawan, chasen, natsume, and lacquered storage box -- ready for the tea room or a Japandi-style home.
A chado set is a curated collection of implements used in the Japanese Way of Tea, a ritual practice centered on mindfulness, harmony, and refined craft. This mid-Showa era set brings together the essential utensils: a hand-thrown stoneware chawan (tea bowl) with a distinctive crosshatch-incised ash glaze over red clay, showing a small impressed maker's seal on the unglazed foot; a full bamboo chasen (whisk) in excellent condition seated in a lacquered wood chasen-tate (whisk stand); a black lacquer natsume (tea caddy) with a gilded fan-and-pine motif on the lid; and a deep-set glazed ceramic Kensui vessel with a richly mottled dark amber glaze -- all housed in a fitted dark lacquer wood storage box with an interior shelf and a circular brass ring pull on top. Each piece reflects the handcrafted Japanese craft traditions that flourished in the post-war Showa period, when tea ceremony practice was actively revived as a cultural touchstone.
Today this complete chado set offers collectors and design enthusiasts a rare opportunity to acquire a fully functional vintage Japanese tea ceremony set in one lot. Display the chawan on a living room shelf or entryway console as a wabi-sabi accent; arrange the natsume and chasen-tate together as a striking bedroom decor vignette; or use the fitted storage box as a desk organizer or keepsake box in a home office. The set makes an exceptional gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone drawn to minimalist decor with authentic cultural depth.
