Antique Japanese Lacquered Wood Chabitsu Tea Utensil Box, Taisho era, 1912-1926 | SKU: 26M-979

A generously sized round chabitsu with a fitted lid, glossy dark lacquer, and a hand-hammered surface texture.

A chabitsu is a traditional Japanese box used for keeping tea-serving articles together, often including cups, small tea wares, and related utensils. This example has a broad cylindrical form with a fitted overhanging lid and a deep, open interior suited to storing and presenting tea items. The exterior and lid show a faceted hand-worked texture beneath a rich, dark reddish-brown lacquer, while the interior is finished in a smooth glossy dark lacquer. Its substantial size and clean circular silhouette make it both practical and visually striking.

In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese lacquerware box works beautifully as a tea utensil container, tabletop organizer, or sculptural accent on a shelf or low table. Its rounded profile and deep lustrous finish pair especially well with natural wood, linen, and quiet minimalist interiors. A distinctive gift for collectors of Japanese antiques and traditional tea-related objects.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
