Vintage Japanese Tanuki Garden Stone Statue, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26M-706-1

A cheerful stone tanuki -- Japan's beloved raccoon dog spirit -- carrying a sake bottle and wearing a braided rope collar, ready to bring good fortune to any garden or interior space.

A tanuki is a Japanese raccoon dog celebrated in folklore as a shapeshifting trickster and a powerful symbol of good luck, prosperity, and conviviality. Stone tanuki statues have stood at the entrances of homes, restaurants, and sake shops across Japan for generations, welcoming guests and warding off misfortune. This handcrafted example is rendered in a speckled grey cast stone with a granite-like finish, capturing the classic rotund silhouette of the tanuki -- round belly, large drooping ears, and an open, good-humored expression. Inset glass eyes give the figure an endearing liveliness, while a braided rope collar encircles the neck and a small sake bottle hangs suspended by a cord from one paw, two of the figure's most traditional folkloric attributes. The surface shows natural weathering consistent with outdoor display, adding an authentic wabi-sabi patina that collectors of Japanese garden art will appreciate.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese tanuki statue is as versatile as it is charming. Display it at your front door or entryway as a traditional good-luck welcome figure, tuck it among plants in a garden bed or on a patio for an authentic Japanese garden accent, or use it as a living room focal point in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Its compact, self-contained form makes it equally at home on a bookshelf, sideboard, or outdoor shelf. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese folk art and vintage Japanese decorative objects -- one of those rare finds that carries both cultural meaning and undeniable character.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
