Japanese Sugatami Full-Length Mirror | Vintage Bedroom Mirror & Entryway Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-551
A freestanding cheval mirror in rich dark hardwood -- understated Japanese craftsmanship for the modern home.
A Sugatami is a traditional Japanese dressing mirror, typically a tall freestanding piece designed for use in the bedroom or dressing area. This vintage example from the Late Showa era features a slender full-length mirror panel set within a smoothly routed rectangular frame of richly stained hardwood, displaying a fine linear grain consistent with sugi (cryptomeria) on the back panel. The mirror pivots on a pair of metal knob bolts mounted on the side uprights, allowing the angle to be adjusted with ease -- a hallmark of the classic cheval-style sugatami. The lower section of the frame incorporates a neat horizontal rail detail in a lighter natural wood tone, adding a quiet decorative accent, while the whole assembly rests on a gracefully curved double-foot trestle base with scrolled ends. The dark reddish-brown lacquer finish is smooth and even, lending the piece a quiet elegance typical of mid-to-late Showa Japanese antique furniture.
This sugatami transitions beautifully into contemporary interiors. Stand it in a bedroom corner as a full-length dressing mirror, or position it in an entryway to open up a narrow hallway -- a classic decorator's trick. Its tall narrow proportions and warm dark wood tones suit Japandi style, wabi-sabi aesthetic, and minimalist decor equally well. The tiltable mirror and stable base mean it requires no wall-mounting, making it ideal for renters or anyone who prefers flexible furniture arrangements. A thoughtful housewarming gift or a striking find for collectors of vintage Japanese homewares.
