Japanese Sugatami Mirror | Antique Full-Length Standing Mirror & Bedroom Decor, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-959

A stately Early Showa floor mirror with boldly figured wood grain and hand-carved fan motifs -- a rare survivor of Japanese antique furniture craftsmanship.

This is a traditional Japanese standing mirror, historically placed in the bedroom or dressing area of a Japanese home to serve as a full-length dressing mirror. This early Showa example is built from a boldly grained hardwood -- likely keyaki (zelkova) -- whose swirling, flame-like figure gives the frame and stand a rich, almost painterly warmth. The tall rectangular mirror plate is held within a rounded-corner frame that pivots on metal screw bolts at the sides, allowing the angle of reflection to be adjusted with ease. The A-frame stand widens gracefully toward the base, anchored by a pair of curved sled feet that add a quietly sculptural quality consistent with the restrained modernism beginning to influence Japanese craft in the late Taisho and early Showa periods. The lower panel of the stand is set slightly recessed and features a hand-carved relief decoration depicting a folding fan with bamboo and a flowering plant -- classic Japanese auspicious motifs rendered with confident, unhurried line work. The back of the mirror panel shows the same richly figured wood, finished with equal care, confirming that this piece was made to be seen from every angle.

In a modern home, this sugatami makes an exceptionally striking full-length floor mirror for a bedroom, dressing room, or entryway. Its warm honey-brown tone and organic grain sit beautifully within a Japandi style interior or a wabi-sabi aesthetic, and the carved fan panel gives it a depth of character that no contemporary mirror can replicate. Lean it against a bedroom wall for an effortlessly curated look, position it in an entryway to open up a narrow hallway, or anchor a walk-in wardrobe with a touch of Japanese antique furniture history. It would make a truly unique housewarming gift for anyone drawn to handcrafted Japanese design.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
