Vintage Japanese Gaku-daiko (楽太鼓) Ceremonial Taiko Drum with Lacquered Stand and Brass Kouhai, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-957-1
A monumental ceremonial taiko on lacquered stand, crowned with an ornate brass halo -- a rare showpiece of Japanese ritual craft.
A taiko is a traditional Japanese drum used in Shinto shrine ceremonies, Buddhist temple rites, and festival processions. This impressive example is a Gaku-daiko -- a suspended ceremonial drum -- presented on a freestanding lacquered wood stand and crowned with a large openwork brass halo known as a kouhai. The drum face is finished in black lacquer and decorated with a bold gold tomoe motif, the ancient tri-comma symbol associated with Shinto shrines and warrior clans. The beaded gold border around the drum head and the sweeping cloud-and-flame carvings on the wood stand are all rendered in the classic Japanese black-and-gold lacquer palette, giving the piece extraordinary visual weight. The brass kouhai is pierced and engraved with auspicious imagery -- rolling waves, swirling clouds, and flame motifs -- with several raised teardrop bosses riveted to its surface, reflecting the high level of craftsmanship typical of Showa-era shrine furnishings.
Today this striking piece works far beyond its ceremonial origins. Its bold black-and-gold palette and commanding silhouette make it an ideal statement accent for a living room, meditation space, or entryway -- a genuine conversation piece that anchors any interior with wabi-sabi gravitas and Japandi style. Interior designers and collectors of Japanese vintage decorative arts will appreciate its scale and rarity; it is equally at home displayed in a gallery-style loft, a Japanese restaurant interior, or a grand foyer. A truly unique gift for collectors and Japanophiles, this piece brings the drama of a shrine interior directly into the modern home.
