Vintage Japanese Oribe Stoneware Kashiki / Jikiro "食籠" (Lidded Sweets Bowl), Mid Showa (1946-1965) | SKU: 26M-638

A signed vintage Oribe-style stoneware lidded bowl for the tea gathering, presented in its original wooden box.

This ceramic vessel is a kashiki, also called jikiro (食籠): a lidded container used in the tea ceremony to present sweets. The broad, shallow body with gently rounded square form, fitted lid, and generous interior suit the serving of wagashi far more than powdered tea storage. Its surfaces are richly varied in the Oribe tradition, combining a creamy crackled ground with deep copper-green glaze flowing over the lid and upper rim. Hand-painted decoration wraps the exterior in alternating panels of lattice, floral roundels, and hanging botanical motifs, while the interior is finished with iron-brown scrollwork and geometric ornament. A substantial arched handle rises from the lid, and the vessel stands on small feet, giving it a composed table presence. It is accompanied by a signed wooden storage box with calligraphy on the lid.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese ceramic makes a striking display piece on a shelf, sideboard, or tea table, where its sculptural lid and dramatic green glaze can be appreciated from every angle. The lidded form also lends itself to holding wrapped sweets, small tea accessories, or treasured objects when not in ceremonial use. With its original wooden box, it remains an appealing choice for collectors of Japanese studio pottery, chanoyu utensils, and mid-century decorative arts.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
