Japanese Onigawara Roof Tile | Decorative Sculpture & Garden Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-607
A boldly sculpted oni demon roof tile -- a rare architectural artifact steeped in Japanese folklore and protective tradition.
An onigawara is a traditional Japanese decorative roof tile, typically placed at the ridge ends or eaves of temples, shrines, and historic residences to ward off evil spirits and misfortune. This striking example is hand-pressed from dark fired clay and features a fearsome oni (demon) face in high relief -- complete with bared teeth, expressive eyes, and dynamic flanking details that include wave and cloud motifs pressed into the body of the tile. The reverse shows the classic semi-cylindrical hollow form typical of Japanese ridge-end tiles, confirming its architectural origin. The deeply darkened surface and rich patina speak to decades of exposure and skilled kiln firing, making it a compelling piece of vintage Japanese craft and architectural history.
Removed from its original rooftop, this onigawara now makes a commanding presence as a standalone decorative sculpture in a modern home. Its raw, sculptural silhouette suits a wabi-sabi aesthetic beautifully -- displayed on a stone floor, garden step, or outdoor terrace as a protective talisman and living room accent. It also works wonderfully as a dramatic garden ornament nestled among moss, gravel, or low plantings, bringing the spirit of a Japanese temple garden into your own outdoor space. A truly unique gift for collectors, architecture enthusiasts, or anyone captivated by Japanese antique design.
