Japanese Jubako Tiered Food Box | Lacquerware Jewelry Organizer & Display Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-097
A glossy black lacquer jubako with gold pine motifs and a vivid red interior -- a cherished vessel of Japanese festive tradition.
A jubako is a traditional Japanese tiered food box, most closely associated with osechi ryori -- the elaborate New Year's celebration foods presented in stacked lacquer tiers as an offering of good fortune. Crafted during the postwar Mid Showa era, this handsome example is finished in deep black urushi-style lacquer over a wood body, with each tier decorated on the exterior with delicately painted gold pine branch motifs -- a classic symbol of longevity and steadfastness in Japanese art. The interior of each tier is lacquered in a bold vermilion red, a combination that has been the hallmark of fine Japanese lacquerware for centuries. The box comes complete with its original kiri (paulownia) wood storage case, wrapped in protective cloth, confirming its status as a treasured household piece. With its gently rounded square corners and slim silver-tone rim detail separating each tier, this vintage Japanese lacquerware box displays the restrained elegance characteristic of mid-century Japanese craft.
Today, this jubako is just as beautiful out of the kitchen as in it. Displayed on a dining table or sideboard, the stacked black-and-gold form makes a striking living room accent in Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors. Each individual tier can be used as a stylish desk organizer or jewelry box -- the vibrant red lacquer interior making every small treasure look its best. The set also functions beautifully as a decorative centerpiece on a coffee table or entryway console, where its bold graphic presence commands attention year-round. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique lacquerware, it arrives with its original storage box for safekeeping.
