Japanese Chabudai Low Table | Vintage Floor Coffee Table & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-527

A handcrafted mid-century Japanese floor table with scalloped apron carving and warm hardwood patina -- a grounding centerpiece for any Japandi-inspired interior.

A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low dining and gathering table, designed for use at floor level in a tatami room where family members would sit on zabuton cushions or directly on the floor. During the Mid Showa period, the chabudai became the heart of the Japanese home -- the place where meals were shared, tea was poured, and daily life unfolded close to the ground. This example is built from a boldly grained hardwood, possibly keyaki (zelkova), with a recessed panel tabletop framed by a flat border -- a clean, refined construction consistent with postwar Japanese antique furniture craftsmanship. The apron beneath the top is shaped with a flowing scalloped cutout on each side, adding a graceful decorative note to an otherwise understated form. Straight, tapered legs are connected by low stretchers, and the underside reveals solid mortise-and-tenon frame construction -- a mark of care that speaks to vintage Japanese woodworking tradition.

In a modern home, this chabudai works beautifully as a living room coffee table when paired with floor cushions or a low sofa, perfectly suited to a wabi-sabi aesthetic or Japandi style decor. Its compact, low-profile form also makes it an ideal floor desk for reading, journaling, or meditation practice -- a peaceful alternative to a conventional work surface. Collectors and design lovers will appreciate its aged patina, honest joinery, and quiet sculptural presence. This piece makes a distinctive housewarming gift or a thoughtful addition to any collection of vintage Japanese furniture.

A quietly striking piece of vintage Japanese antique furniture that brings the warmth of mid-century Japanese home life into any modern living space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
