Japanese Oke Wooden Bucket | Vintage Planter & Bathroom Organizer, 1990-2018 (Heisei), SKU 26M-005
A hand-coopered Japanese oke tub in warm honey-toned wood -- a timeless piece of traditional Japanese craft.
An oke is a traditional Japanese cooperage vessel -- a stave-built wooden tub or bucket assembled from carefully fitted vertical planks and bound with strips of woven wood or bamboo banding. Used throughout Japanese daily life in bathhouses (sento and onsen), kitchens, and households for centuries, the oke represents one of Japan's oldest and most refined woodworking traditions. This example is constructed from pale, straight-grained softwood -- likely sugi (Japanese cedar) or hinoki (Japanese cypress), both of which were the classic choices for bath and water vessels due to their natural moisture resistance and pleasant, clean aroma. The staves are tightly fitted and secured with multiple bands of thin woven wood, wrapped at both the upper and lower sections of the body, lending the piece its characteristic barrel-like silhouette. The smooth, unfinished interior and solid flat base speak to honest, functional craftsmanship typical of vintage Japanese folk objects.
Today this handcrafted Japanese oke makes a wonderfully versatile accent piece for the modern home. Its generous open mouth and sturdy form make it ideal as a living room or entryway planter -- tuck a potted plant inside for an instant Japandi style vibe. In the bathroom it works beautifully as a towel holder or toiletry organizer, nodding to the oke's original bathing heritage. It also shines as a kitchen or dining room ice bucket, wine chiller, or rustic utensil caddy. A unique housewarming gift for anyone drawn to the wabi-sabi aesthetic or natural wood decor, this piece brings warmth and quiet character to any interior.
