Vintage Japanese Shoboshi Lacquered Wood Fire Brigade Helmet, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-688

A rare lacquered shoboshi helmet from wartime Japan -- a striking collector's artifact with vivid red urushi finish and original hardware intact.

A shoboshi helmet is a traditional Japanese firefighter's helmet worn by municipal fire brigade members during the late Meiji through mid Showa periods. This striking example is formed from a lightweight wood core and finished in a deep oxblood-red lacquer (urushi) that retains remarkable gloss and depth after nearly a century. The segmented crown rises to a cast metal finial with a fluted petal collar -- a detail seen on official brigade helmets of the era -- while the front face bears a small brass ring fitting from which a period leather tassel pendant hangs. A circular mon (family or brigade crest) is stenciled in gold on the side panel, and the interior retains its original braided hemp chin cord with a knotted toggle and a fabric sweatband -- all original components, rarely found together. The silhouette, with its gently flared brim, echoes earlier samurai-era helmet forms, reflecting the deliberate visual language of civic authority that Japanese fire brigades cultivated well into the twentieth century. This is a genuine piece of vintage Japanese craft history.

Today, this shoboshi helmet commands immediate attention as a living room accent or study display piece -- mounted on a stand or nestled in a shadow box, it anchors a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior with dramatic sculptural presence. Collectors of Japanese militaria, lacquerware, and vintage civic artifacts will find it equally at home in a dedicated display cabinet alongside swords, armor fragments, or historical photographs. It also makes a unique gift for Japanophiles, historians, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese objects with genuine provenance. The bold red lacquer pairs beautifully with neutral linen, dark wood shelving, or raw concrete walls in a modern minimalist decor setting.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
