Japanese Tekaburo Hand Warmer Brazier | Decorative Accent & Living Room Sculpture, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-838-2
A finely cast bronze tekaburo with archaic relief motifs, ring handles, and a pierced floral lid -- a rare hand-warming brazier from interwar Japan.
A tekaburo is a traditional Japanese hand-warming brazier designed to hold a small quantity of burning charcoal, radiating gentle heat through a pierced lid. This handcrafted Japanese antique is cast in dark patinated bronze and raised on a smooth, tiered pedestal base that contrasts beautifully with the richly textured body above. The rounded belly is encircled by a broad band of dense tortoiseshell-pattern ground relief -- a technique known as nanako -- over which bold scrolling arabesque motifs rise in high relief, lending the piece a commanding visual weight. Paired ring handles flank either side, cast with fine decorative bosses at their mounts. The fitted lid is separately cast and densely worked with chrysanthemum and foliate relief, centered on an elongated oval vent. A maker's cartouche seal is impressed to the base, encircled by cloud-scroll decoration, attesting to workshop pride during the Early Showa period.
Today this striking Japanese antique bronze makes a compelling living room accent or entryway statement piece, displayed on a console, sideboard, or low shelf in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. Its dark, sculptural form pairs naturally with natural stone, raw linen, and aged wood surfaces. The open bowl, once lined for charcoal, can gracefully hold decorative stones, dried botanicals, or a small candle arrangement. It would make a distinguished gift for collectors of Japanese antique metalwork or for Japanophiles who appreciate the quiet authority of hand-cast bronze objects.
