Vintage Japanese Chabudai Round Low Table, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-498-2
A beautifully lacquered round chabudai with a detachable folding leg base -- a rare and functional piece of vintage Japanese furniture.
A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low table designed for floor-level dining and gathering, used atop tatami mats in the family room or washitsu. This handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture piece features a generous circular top finished in a deep, lustrous black lacquer that has mellowed to a warm dark brown over the decades, carrying the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi in every surface scratch and age mark. The underside reveals a well-engineered rectangular folding leg assembly -- a joinery framework of square-section legs braced with crossbars -- that locks the top securely in place when in use and folds flat for compact storage. This detachable, collapsible design was a hallmark of practical Early Showa household furniture, reflecting the resourceful craftsmanship of the era.
In a modern home, this vintage chabudai low table is a versatile and striking living room accent. Place it at the center of floor cushions or a low sofa arrangement as a round coffee table with a distinctly Japandi style aesthetic. It also works beautifully as a meditation room platform, a bedside table in a minimalist decor bedroom, or a display surface for ceramics, books, and botanicals. The folding base makes it easy to store between gatherings, and the deep lacquered finish pairs naturally with both contemporary and traditional interiors. A truly unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese craft.
