Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Vintage Jewelry Box & Desk Organizer, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-106
A beautifully crafted Mid Showa haribako with dramatic figured wood, a hinged top compartment, and multiple pull-out drawers -- an exceptional piece of vintage Japanese craft.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box designed to keep needles, thread, thimbles, and other needlework essentials neatly organized at a woman's workstation. This handsome example, dating to the Mid Showa period (1946-1965), reflects the postwar revival of fine domestic craftsmanship in Japan. The exterior is finished in a boldly figured hardwood -- likely kaki (persimmon) -- with a deep, lacquer-like polish that sets off the swirling grain to striking effect. The rounded top corners and gently curved base apron give the piece a refined, almost Art Deco sensibility that was fashionable in Japanese interior design of the era. Each drawer front mirrors the figured veneer, creating a visually unified facade that speaks to the care taken in selecting and matching the timber.
Today this vintage haribako translates beautifully into a modern home. Its hinged lid compartment with a fitted removable tray makes it an ideal jewelry box or vanity organizer for a bedroom dresser, keeping rings, bracelets, and earrings perfectly sorted. The multiple pull-out drawers offer generous storage for a home office -- pens, stationery, and small accessories slip in and out with ease, making it a characterful desk organizer in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic workspace. It also makes a wonderful housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese storage pieces with genuine history. Display it on a console, a bedside table, or a writing desk, and it will draw admiring glances wherever it sits.
