Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Antique Jewelry Box & Desktop Organizer, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-556-1
A boldly grained Early Showa haribako with a lift-top compartment, multiple drawers, and dramatic flame-figured wood veneer -- a standout piece of handcrafted Japanese antique craft.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used by women to store needles, thread, thimbles, and other needlework tools. This exceptional example, dating to the Early Showa period (1927--1945), showcases the distinctive craftsmanship of the era -- a time when Japanese artisans began blending traditional box-making techniques with a more streamlined, modern sensibility. The exterior is veneered in a richly figured hardwood displaying bold, wave-like black striping on a warm amber ground, consistent in character with kaki (persimmon) or a similarly dramatic Japanese figured wood. The case frame is finished in a deep ebonized wood, creating a striking two-tone contrast that elevates this piece well above everyday utility objects. A hinged lift-top lid opens to reveal an interior compartment divided by a wooden partition -- ideal for storing larger or frequently accessed items -- while multiple pull-out drawers below, each fitted with a shaped metal bar pull, provide organized storage in a graduated layout. The drawer interiors are constructed in a lighter, unfinished wood, typical of quality Japanese box construction of the period.
Today, this vintage Japanese haribako transitions beautifully into modern living spaces. On a bedroom dresser or vanity, it makes an elegant jewelry box -- its multiple drawers perfectly sized for rings, earrings, bracelets, and small accessories. On a home office desk, it serves as a compact desktop organizer for stationery, keepsakes, or small collectibles. The dramatic flame-grain veneer and ebonized frame bring a wabi-sabi aesthetic and Japandi style warmth to any room, making this a truly unique housewarming gift or a prized find for collectors of Japanese antique furniture. Whether displayed in a living room, bedroom, or study, this haribako commands attention as both a functional storage piece and a sculptural object.
