Vintage Japanese Lacquer Chataku Tea Saucers, Set of Five, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-848-2
A set of five vermilion lacquerware chataku -- handcrafted saucers for the Japanese tea ceremony, presented in their original signed wooden storage box.
A chataku is a traditional Japanese tea saucer used in the chado (way of tea) to cradle a teacup during formal and informal tea gatherings. Each piece in this set is turned from wood and finished in a rich, glossy vermilion urushi-style lacquer -- the deep red hue long associated with auspicious occasions and refined Japanese hospitality. The wide, gently flared rim transitions smoothly into a low foot ring, a classic form designed to cradle a yunomi or teacup securely while protecting the tray or table beneath. The lacquer surface is uniform and lustrous across all five pieces, reflecting the care of a skilled craftsperson. The wooden storage box is inscribed with the item name and what appears to be a craftsman's attribution, indicating these were produced as a named artisan set -- a mark of quality in vintage Japanese lacquerware collecting.
Beyond the tea room, this vivid set translates beautifully into contemporary home styling. Use the chataku as ring dishes or small jewelry trays on a bedroom dresser, as condiment or salt pinch bowls on a dinner table, or as sculptural accent pieces grouped on a shelf or sideboard in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi interior. Their bold vermilion color makes them a natural focal point in a minimalist decor scheme. Stored in their original box, this set also makes a distinctive housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese vintage tableware and lacquerware.
