Vintage Japanese Lacquer Musical Jewelry Box, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-008-3
A black lacquer music box with hand-painted flower cart motif, red felt interior, and vanity mirror -- a charming vintage Japanese keepsake box made in Japan.
An otehako is a traditional Japanese decorative box used to store personal keepsakes, jewelry, and small treasures. This handcrafted example from the Late Showa era features a deep black lacquer finish over a wood body, decorated on the lid with a vivid hand-painted scene of a golden gisha-guruma -- a flower cart -- overflowing with bold red roses, accented with red cord detail. The warm gold tones of the cart against the glossy black ground reflect a distinctly Japanese aesthetic sensibility. A small speaker grille on the underside, along with the original orange "Musical Box -- made in Japan" label, confirms this is a vintage Japanese music box with a wind-up movement. The original product label indicates the tune as a classic Japanese melody, adding a layer of cultural authenticity to this vintage Japanese craft piece.
Open the hinged lid to reveal a striking red felt-lined interior fitted with multiple compartments -- including a ring roll holder and a open storage section -- alongside a full-width vanity mirror set into the lid. This combination of music, mirror, and organized storage makes it instantly functional as a bedroom jewelry box or vanity organizer. Its compact rectangular form and Japandi-inspired lacquerware aesthetic sit beautifully on a dressing table, nightstand, or as a living room accent piece. It makes a wonderful housewarming gift or unique gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft and decorative objects.
